Financial planners have added a new service to their list of skills in the past twenty years: helping clients make a will. While it's true that most financial planners are not lawyers and cannot provide legal services, they can help their clients organize their affairs to make sure they create an estate plan that takes care of their assets and loved ones.

They do this with the same tools they use to help their clients with other financial issues—gathering information about their client's related assets, goals, and objectives, making sure they have all of the pertinent paperwork, and working with them to come up with a strategy that fits within their budget.

Importance of a Financial Advisors in a Will

Financial advisors can help clients by gathering information about related assets, goals, and objectives. For example, suppose someone has a house or other property that sits in joint tenancy with someone else. In that case, the advisor may suggest making a "tenancy by the entirety," ensuring that those assets remain in both people's estates. If someone has children from previous marriages who are also beneficiaries of her estate, she may want to include them in her will to ensure that each child receives what is rightfully his or hers.

They may help clients prepare wills, but they're not necessarily the best people to ask. Most of the time, financial planners are good at what they do—they can help you understand your financial situation's ins and outs and advise you on making smart decisions. But when it comes to preparing a will, you should probably leave it to an attorney.
