What is the process of inheritance with a will?
The process of inheritance goes as follows. After you die, your will is probated, and the will executor, who is named in the will, notifies people named in the will to come to a meeting to discuss your estate. At this meeting, all of your assets are divided and distributed to those who are entitled to them according to your will. After this process is over, the only thing left for the heirs to do is close the estate by having a trusteeship of the remaining assets.
When a person dies, the people they left behind will have to deal with their possessions. Their will has a lot to say about how this will happen, and it can be surprising to hear that people won't be able to take everything they want from someone’s possessions.
The legal process of distribution is called "administration." If a person decides to include a will in their estate, they'll appoint an executor who will distribute their possessions according to the directions in their will. The executor is both legally responsible for carrying out the wishes of the testator (the person who made the will) and for making sure that the wishes are carried out in accordance with all relevant laws. The law requires an executor who is at least 18 years old, and if that person dies or becomes unable to carry out his or her duties before finishing administration, someone else will be appointed in their place. You can choose anyone as your executor—it doesn't have to be a family member.
