Is there anything like a "pre-will"?
The answer is yes, and it's called a "pre-will." A pre-will is essentially a will that you make now, before you have a family. It acts as a safety net in case something happens to you, so your parents or partner can help get your affairs in order. A will—and hence a pre-will—isn't just an old-fashioned way of leaving your assets to the people who are important to you. It's also a means of making sure that your wishes are respected in the event of an emergency, like if you were suddenly incapacitated, then died or went missing. Without a pre-will, there would be no power of attorney for anyone to access your bank accounts or other assets.
A will is the document that's used to determine how your assets are split up after your death. But before you can write a will, you have to know what you want to do with those assets. That's where pre-will comes in. Pre-will is basically just figuring out what you want done with your assets and writing it down before you finalize your will.
Pre-wills are also called advance directives and living wills. It is a contract that you can sign in which you make provisions for how your estate will be divided up in the event of your death. As it's written now, your will will go through probate, which is a legal process that grants authority to a judge or person to distribute all of your assets according to the instructions you've set forth in your will.
